Clearas Water Recovery approached Iron Light with the goal of creating higher value products from their algae biomass. A number of product categories were selected including: nutritional supplements, algae plastics, cosmetics and paint/dye.

Product development began with formulations of a vegan protein base and functional ingredients including hemp extracts and caffeine with the addition of algae for added nutrition. After initial testing, the products we moved into the next development phase with a 30-day trial period to measure the potential effects on personal nutrition and weight loss. During that period, Iron Light began building a brand around the algae products called Spirul. The intention was to showcase the positive effects of consuming the protein blends that contain algae and other functional ingredients.

Novel algae products were pursed. The first of which including the formulation of a plastic composite that featured 50% algae by volume. The composite was able to be cast into various shapes. Also, the chlorophyll from the algae was extracted, concentrated and formulated into a clothing dye for testing with natural and synthetic fabrics.

Lastly, Iron Light providing supporting services for algae biomass testing as well as interpretation of results through a lens of increasing efficiency and productivity of the underlying technology.
